At noon on October 1st 2009 "22 Jermyn Street" will close its doors behind our last departing guest and will cease operating as a hotel. The hotel has been under the same direction since 1915 when my grandfather first signed a lease with the Crown Estate at an annual rent of £900.00! Since then, three generations of this family have both lived here and provided untold numbers of guests from around the world with unrivalled and unique hospitality.
I have been the proprietor since 1990 when I agreed to buy the hotel from my father, famous for his wonderful eccentricity. I converted it into one of London's first boutique hotels and in the last 20 years, 22 Jermyn Street has gathered a fanatically faithful following, and earned countless awards and accolades.
The hotel has combined the highest standards of hospitality with a supreme level of comfort and personal service in stylish surroundings, all in perfect harmony with Jermyn Street and its history of elegance and discretion. Sadly the lease has expired and the greater part of the city block in which the hotel is located is to be redeveloped by the Crown Estate as a project named St James's Gateway, over the next 2/3 years. Like much else in London, it is planned that this very comprehensive and handsome project will be completed in time for the Olympic Games in 2012
The management team, who have all been with me for over 12 years, are taking up similar positions in other hotels. You will find Annie and Iryna at "41" Siobhain at Egerton House Hotel, and Fran at The Milestone. General Manager and co-director, Laurie Smith, will continue to work with me on new projects as will Saeed Gillani, my co-director and CFO
The collection of Newsletters has been one of our unique facilities. These have proven so popular with guests - the Restaurant Newsletter alone has an annual circulation of over 56,000 a year - that they will be maintained in the future on a regular basis. They will be available on this website, which will remain as: www.22jermyn.com and is currently in the course of reconstruction.
