Jermyn Street's history dates back to 1664, when Henry Jermyn, then Earl of St Albans, leased 45 acres of Pall Mall field from the Crown. On this land he built St James's Square and the surrounding streets, one of which became Jermyn Street.
The first house was built on the site of 22 Jermyn Street in about 1685. During the 18th century it was occupied by tradesmen who served the grandees of St James's Square. They included a bag-maker, a marine glue manufacturer, a hat-trimmer, a stay-maker, a grocer and a maker of hairbrushes. These tradesmen supplemented their incomes by sub-letting the upper storeys as residential chambers to fashionable men-about-town. By 1861 the occupier was an Italian silk merchant, Cesare Salvucci, who in a year had at least ten lodgers.
15 years later, Salvucci's shop was taken over by a military tailor who had as a lodger, Theodore Rothschild (of the famous banking house).
The present building was reconstructed shortly before the turn of the 19th century. It is located on the corner of Eagle Place and was originally known as Eyrie Mansion - for fairly obvious reasons!
Now owned by Henry Togna, 22 Jermyn Street has been in the Togna family since 1915, when Henry's grandfather first opened residential chambers at this prestigious address. When Henry's mother was a child, one of the tenants was the Marchese Guglielmo Marconi. She was fascinated by the cobweb of wires being strung across Marchese Marconi's suite and was intrigued to learn that he was developing a 'wireless'!
It then passed in 1939 to Henry's father, Henry Snr, who changed it to serviced apartments, which he ran until 1989. Henry's business success in residential and international property management and development led him to recognise the potential of the building and its unrivaled position in the heart of London. He decided to utilise this experience and create an elegant, comfortable, luxurious and very private townhouse hotel.
In 1990 Henry re-opened 22 Jermyn Street as a luxury townhouse hotel. It was soon renowned for its supreme level of comfort, personal service, convenience for families with children, and its extensive facilities for the business user.
